L’Aventure du Sucre

Discover the history of sugar at L’Aventure du Sucre

The history and prosperity of Mauritius is linked to the sugar cane industry. Sugar cane was introduced to Mauritius by the Dutch in 1639, but it was French Governor Mahé de Labourdonnais who really started the sugar industry in Mauritius during 1743.

Today, sugar is no longer the backbone of the Mauritian economy, but its by-products, such as rum, remain hugely popular. The L’Aventure du Sucre museum in Pamplemousses will give you a fascinating insight into how the history of Mauritius intertwines with sugar, explaining the importance of the sugar industry in both the island’s past and its present.

Set inside a historic sugar mill factory, you’ll be taken on an educational journey that spans over 280 years before seeing the various stages of the sugar-making process in action. There are also opportunities to go on cane-cutting tours, taste test more than 30 sugarcane products and put the sugarcane juice to good use in a cocktail or two!
