Domaine de Labourdonnais

Explore a historic château at Domaine de Labourdonnais

If you love history, a visit to Domaine de Labourdonnais in Mapou is a must. Domaine de Labourdonnais is famous for its château, which was built between 1856 and 1859 and was inhabited by a Mauritian family for over 150 years. The driveway up to the mansion is spectacular, lined on both sides by Intendance trees, creating a real spectacle when the house comes into view.

The house is a neo-classical style with the ground floor elevated and a wide veranda wrapping around the house. Step inside and admire the dining room’s beautifully detailed wallpaper and the grand teak and black wood furniture, learning about the huge jars used to marinade fish and meat in the pantry. You can also head upstairs to see the elegant bedroom and watch a video about the history of the house. Guides are on hand to give you insight into the house and its owners.

Outside, you can stroll around the estate’s orchards and landscaped gardens and choose to have a fine dining meal overlooking the house at La Table du Château, which serves up gastronomic dishes using fruits and vegetables harvested on the estate. Alternatively, La Terrasse cafe offers lighter lunch options. After, pop into the shop and pick up some jams, fruit pastes or rum made from the estate’s fruit.
