Located high in the Bois Chéri region of Mauritius, the Avalon Golf Estate offers sweeping views of the southern coastline and surrounding tea plantations, rivers, mountains and ravines. Designed by Peter Matkovich, this 18-hole course covers 250 acres and is surrounded on all sides by jaw-dropping views.

Its elevated course means that cooler, breezy conditions can be expected, a factor that was incorporated into the course’s design through a flawless balance of holes that accommodate prevailing winds. Luscious plants and trees have led to Avalon being called “the golfing garden of Eden” and, with a landscape like this, it’s not hard to see why. A rare inland golf course on the island, it’s also accessible to all standards of players, with a number of tee options. Just make sure you leave plenty of time to soak up the views.

This more accessible younger sibling to the Legend course at Constance Belle Mare Plage boasts 18-holes and was built to USPGA specifications. With an undulating layout, practice fairway and golf academy, it was designed by Rodney Wright and Peter Allis and opened in 2002.

Links Golf Course is considerably shorter than the Legend course, with water coming into play on six of the holes. Interesting trees and rocks provide an additional challenge, but this tough but fair course offers some great risk/reward holes. Sensational panoramic views await at Links, which is sunset-facing, and the second hole features a double dogleg par-2 which gives you the chance of reaching the green in two. Guests staying at the Constance Belle Mare Plage can also enjoy a complimentary shuttle service between the hotel and the course.

Wright said: “The design brief was to construct a true championship golf course that could be enjoyed by all levels of players and at 7,524 yards from the tips, the challenge is obvious. The secret to accomplishing the enjoyment part is fairness, variety, the abundance of tee positions and memorability.”
