Rodrigues Island is an island dependency of Mauritius around 580 kilometres northeast of Mauritius. It takes around an hour and a half to fly to the island from Mauritius – and it is worth the journey! You’ll discover beautiful, unspoilt nature, a vast lagoon for watersports and fishing, and incredibly welcoming locals. The island is a paradise for kitesurfing, hiking and diving, and you can end active days tucking into Rodrigues’ delicious and creative cuisine. One of the island’s highlights is François Leguat Reserve, a valley home to hundreds of giant tortoises.

Rodrigues Island has a slow pace of life and a traditional vibe that feels relatively untouched by tourism. You will inevitably fall under the charm of this sleepy sister island, which is perfect for disconnecting and relaxing.

Dazzling blue water and soft white sand, Blue Bay Beach is one of the best stretches of shoreline in Mauritius. You can admire all the hues of blues in the lagoon and deeper ocean from under shady casuarina trees, heading there on a weekday for some quiet time with a good book or at the weekends to join the locals for lively music and a picnic. Located in the southeast of Mauritius, the beach is easy to reach and a popular spot for swimming, boat excursions, scuba diving, windsurfing and parasailing. It’s also one of the best places to go on a glass-bottomed boat tour, as this is where you will find Blue Bay Marine Park.

Spot a brain coral garden teeming with butterfly fish and damselfish, and keep an eye out for turtles and dolphins, too. You don’t need to go far to catch a glimpse of this marine world. Simply wade out from Blue Bay Beach and see wrasse, clownfish, angelfish, coral, seagrasses and more. When you get peckish, visit one of Blue Bay Beach’s food vendors for some local street food.

Pods of dolphins are regularly seen off the coastline of Mauritius and spotting them in the wild is one of life’s most special moments. The west coast is their favourite playground and you can see both bottlenose and spinner dolphins here, often travelling in pods of 20. Sometimes we are lucky enough to spot over 100 sliding through the water to the deeper ocean off Le Morne peninsula!

There are strict guidelines in place to keep you and the dolphins safe, which have been set by the Tourism Authority (Dolphin and Whale Watching) Regulations 2012. These guidelines include:

  • You cannot feed a dolphin, or throw food or any other object, substance or matter near or around a dolphin
  • You must travel with a licenced dolphin watching provider
  • Pleasure crafts can only approach dolphins from the side, must follow a parallel course to the dolphin, and operate the pleasure craft at a no-wake speed
  • You cannot touch, or attempt to touch, a dolphin
  • You cannot make noise to attract their attention or circle around them
  • If swimming with dolphins, you must be briefed on sound techniques related to calm and silent swimming. No more than three swimmers (including a designated life saver) to enter, dive or snorkel simultaneously in the sea

Find full details of the Tourism Authority (Dolphin and Whale Watching) Regulations 2012.

Respecting their underwater world is key to them returning to our coastline.

One of the best ways to see Mauritius is from above! During your next visit, book a seaplane tour and take off from the water, rising into a cloudless sky.

Peer out of the window and you’ll see a whole palette of blues: the swirl of turquoise lagoons melting into an inky blue ocean. You’ll soar over tiny islands surrounded by coral reefs, sparkling beaches edged by emerald-green palm trees and yachts neatly lined up in a harbour.

Fly past the iconic Le Morne mountain, and get your camera ready for the underwater waterfall – an optical illusion you’ll only be able to spot from this aerial viewpoint.

Would you like to see Mauritius in a seaplane?

Embrace a slow pace of life at Île aux Bénitiers, an island just off the southwest coast of Mauritius. It sits in a lagoon near Le Morne and measures just 2 kilometres by 500 metres. It’s the perfect place to switch-off and do very little. A day trip here is all about picnicking on the dazzling beach, bird watching and taking a look around the small coconut farm. You can snorkel through the lagoon to the clam-shaped Crystal Rock or spend time on the soft white sand. That’s about as taxing as it gets!

You can get to Île aux Benitiers on a local fishing boat from La Gaulette or Case Noyale – keep an eye out for dolphins, as you may be lucky enough to spot them on the boat ride over. Alternatively, catch a catamaran or speedboat across to this small, uninhabited and unspoilt island on an organised day trip. Many include a barbecue lunch, so tuck in!

The beach is best known for being home to a well-preserved Martello Tower (a small defensive fort), as well as a number of cannons that sit along the white sandy beach. The beach is protected by sandbags along the shoreline, so some parts of the water are not easily accessible, but it is a quiet beach and perfect for a walk.

You’ll see fishing boats bobbing in the water and many boat trips depart from this area, so you can explore the ocean and hope to see local pods of dolphins which are often spotted along this coastline. La Preneuse Beach is also a great spot to watch the sunset and you can see the towering Le Morne Brabant mountain in the distance.

If you’re just there to experience beach life, grab a shady spot under the trees and order a drink at one of the rustic bars, later taking a dip in the clear water. This is paradise!
