Mauritius Weather

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

Mauritius is a year-round destination. There are two distinct climates on the island. The coast is usually hotter, whereas the central plateau can be much cooler. There are also two seasons, summer and winter. Want to know more? Here is our detailed guide on the best time to visit Mauritius.

Coastal Climate

When is the best time to go to Mauritius?

Mauritius has a beautiful tropical climate with balmy temperatures year-round. Our island has two seasons:

Summer runs from November to April

  • The average daytime temperatures on the coast are between 28-33°C
  • The average water temperature is between 26-30°C
  • There is a higher chance of rain from January to March

Winter runs from May to October

  • The average daytime temperatures on the coast are between 22-28°C
  • The average water temperature is between 22-25°C

We experience a daily microclimate, which means that even when it rains, it usually passes quickly and overcast skies soon turn to sunshine.

Depending on what you’re looking for from your holiday, some months might suit you better than others.

Mauritius weather in summer (November to April)

Best time for a beach holiday

If you’re looking for maximum heat, come to our island in summer, between November and April. Summer mornings are all about blazing sunshine with barely any wind, so you can pick your sun lounger and laze the morning away. There may be afternoon rain, but you can use this time to go for lunch or have a spa treatment. April is a lovely time for a beach holiday, as the seawater has heated up over the summer months and there is less chance of rain.

Best time for a diving holiday

While you can dive at any time of year in Mauritius, the summer months are the most popular, from November to April. Bright and varied marine wildlife is drawn to the calm, warm waters and you can have hours of fun exploring the reefs and coral gardens surrounding our island. There are around 100 different dive sites and the waters are home to rainbow-coloured fish, turtles and rays.

Best time for celebrations

Each year, we have many guests joining us for a tropical Christmas and New Year, and our hotels know how to make the most of the festivities. In February/March, we celebrate Holi. On the day of the Festival of Colours, we cover the streets in brightly coloured powders. Then in November, we come together for Diwali to mark the Festival of Lights. Weddings can be celebrated year-round and the hottest months are November to April (though the wettest months are January to March in Mauritius).

Mauritius weather in winter (May to October)

We don’t have the ‘shoulder’ seasons of spring and autumn, so our second season is winter. Although it’s not ‘winter’ as you might know it – daytime temperatures remain around 23°C throughout the season (it does get a bit windy, so you might like to bring a jumper for the evenings). September to November are the driest months on the island and many of our islanders would recommend visiting at this time of year.

Best time for hiking in Mauritius

Mauritius weather in winter sees slightly cooler temperatures, which means that hiking is much more pleasant from May to October. Our island has fantastic hiking trails, from waterfall-chasing in Chamarel to boulder-scrambling up Trois Mamelles. Our expert guides can show you hidden attractions and breathtaking views.

Best time for kitesurfing

Kitesurfing season in Mauritius starts in April and runs through to November, so it spans all the winter months. The breeze picks up in winter, particularly around the east and south coasts, and July and August are the windiest months for the best kitesurfing. Le Morne is the most popular spot to kitesurf.

Best time for quieter beaches

If you prefer walks along the sand to sunbathing, you’ll love our beaches in winter – especially on the west coast where they are more sheltered from the wind. The beaches tend to be quieter in winter, from May to October, so it’s an ideal time for wellbeing activities and mindful moments.
